Our kid’s dentist near you specializes in maintaining the overall dental health of all children, from infants through their teen years. We are educated and experienced and know exactly how to properly care for children’s unique mouth structures and dental needs because children’s dental needs are significantly different from those of adults.

Dr. Nazanin Abolhasani is always available to answer questions about proper dental hygiene and care for your children’s primary and permanent teeth.  A child’s first primary tooth usually appears around the age of 6 months old.  After the first tooth, it is highly recommended your baby visit the dentist before their first birthday.

The benefit of taking a young child to the dentist for an early mouth and teeth exam is to help detect any early signs of tooth decay, which can then be easily treated.  During initial dental visits, we will talk with the parent about certain behaviors that cause tooth-related problems, like tongue thrusting, thumb sucking, sleeping with a bottle, and even how a poor diet can affect your Child’s teeth.

Visiting an experienced, trustworthy pediatric dentist is vital to a child’s overall oral health, which includes regular teeth cleaning, dental exams, and fluoride treatments.

Pediatric Dentistry Garland Important Dental Facts

  • What determines healthy teeth in adulthood is the development of good, healthy dental habits during childhood that continue into adulthood.  This means that if you have healthy teeth when you are young, you will carry on those great habits into adulthood.
  • Baby teeth play the most important role in our oral health because they help us eat and produce sound and speech while keeping space for our adult teeth to come in.  Eruption of adult teeth can be impaired if baby teeth are lost too early.
  • Tooth decay is the leading cause of tooth loss in children.  It is important for parents to have the knowledge to properly care for their children’s oral health.
  • Tooth decay occurs due to bacteria on and between the teeth. This is influenced by the amount of sugar and sweets in the mouth. Brushing the teeth regularly will eliminate the chance of tooth decay. Additionally, the dentist’s application of fluoride is very important to help prevent tooth decay.
  • Tooth decay must be treated during its early stages when it is very small. If it is not treated in a timely manner, the infected area will enlarge, and the tooth will become even more infected with decay, possibly causing it to be extracted. Most of the time, early prevention will stop the decay from progressing, and the tooth can be saved.
  • Most children receive a filling to restore the tooth, but if the decay is larger, a pulpotomy or a stainless steel crown may be recommended.
  • Children can be treated for dental work as early as one year old.  The dental treatment varies depending on the case and the Child.  Children under three years of age must be treated under some form of sedation, either nitrous oxide or non-IV conscious sedation.  This treatment also requires them to be placed on the papoose board to protect them from the instrument and accidental movement.  Children above three years of age can be treated easily if cooperative, and if not, the treatment would be under the conditions stated above.
  • Children treated in our office have been successful, and about 99% of their teeth have been saved, facilitating the eruption of their permanent teeth.
