Whether there is a problem with a tooth or a wisdom tooth, tooth extraction may be the best option for your specific needs.  When a tooth cannot be fixed, it would probably need to be removed.  This is something you and your dentist can discuss and go over in detail about any possible options available to you before a tooth extraction is recommended.  Additionally, impacted teeth and wisdom teeth can possibly result in problems like pain or infections and may very well need to be removed.  Extractions can vary from one tooth to needing to remove all four of the wisdom teeth simultaneously.  No matter what, Dentist Garland can remedy the situation and help you regain good oral health once again.

When a tooth extraction is recommended:

  • The tooth has a deep cavity or is damaged by a fracture and cannot be repaired.
  • Braces are needed and a tooth crowding others needs to be removed.
  • The tooth has a substantial infection that cannot be fixed by just a root canal.
  • Wisdom teeth, which normally come in during late teens or early twenties, may have to be extracted if they are infected, decayed or causing any pain.
  • There are teeth blocking other teeth from coming in. which maybe from baby teeth that haven’t yet fallen out or extra teeth that have grown in.

Simple Tooth Extraction

A simple extraction is the removal of a visible tooth.  The tooth is loosened, and then removed carefully with forceps.  This procedure generally requires only a local anesthetic.

Surgical Tooth Extraction

During a surgical tooth extraction, a local anesthetic together with an IV or general anesthetic may be given during the procedure.

A surgical tooth extraction may be needed if:

  • A tooth hasn’t come in yet like a wisdom tooth.
  • A tooth has broken off at the gum line.
  • A tooth has curved or large roots.

Dentistry Garland Important Tooth Extraction Facts

  • It is rare wisdom teeth can be saved and become functional because most wisdom teeth are usually impacted in some way or other and can damage adjacent teeth and affect overall oral health.  It is less traumatic and easier to remove them at younger age (13-19 years old) when their root is not completely formed.
  • Extraction of a tooth is a treatment option if a tooth cannot be saved or a patient doesn’t take advantage of any other option.
  • If teeth are restorable, we recommend saving them simply because replacing teeth can be costly and even traumatic.

No matter what, Dentist Garland will give you the best options for your particular dental needs.  Whether you need a tooth extraction or not, we will take great care of you and make you as comfortable as possible.
